The life of a nurse is one filled with demanding work hours, stressful situations, and a lifelong commitment to the craft. Unlike other jobs, nurses rarely work the normal 9 to 5. They are expected to work nights, weekends, and holidays on some occasions and that is just the beginning. Nurses generally work over 40 hours every week and sometimes work upwards of 60 to 80 hours in a single week’s time.

Nurses must also be able to remain calm in the face of extreme stress and be willing to deal with life or death situations on a daily basis. The work a nurse does is both physically and emotionally demanding as well. Nurses are asked to work on their feet for most of their shift and do things like lift heavy patients or maneuver awkward medical equipment throughout a medical facility.

In addition, nurses must be able to handle emotional patients and family members in life or death situations on a regular basis. All of these things contribute to the demanding life of a nurse and because of them, not just anyone will enjoy nursing as a career. Before pursuing a job as a nurse, there are definitely a few things that need to be considered.

Long Hours

One of the most demanding aspects in the life of a nurse is the number of hours he or she will be asked to work over the course of his or her career. Nurses are generally required to work long, odd shifts and be on call for a great deal of the time. There is no nine to five nursing career available. In order to be successful in this career choice, it is necessary to embrace a chaotic schedule including weekends, nights, and holidays.

Physically Demanding

Nurses are asked to perform physically demanding tasks on a daily basis. Aside from being on their feet for most of their shift, nurses must also be able to lift and move patients, maneuver heavy equipment, and work safely in stressful situations. Without the proper level of fitness, this can be extremely difficult. The life of a nurse is definitely one that requires physical and mental stamina in order to be successful at all levels.

Emotionally Draining

A job as stressful as nursing can be emotionally draining. Life or death situations are a common occurrence in the life of a nurse and there are times when the outcome isn’t favorable. Dealing with that kind of stress is never easy and a nurse must have the emotional fortitude to bounce back from a negative medical outcome.

Compassion Required

Of all the character traits that make up a good nurse, compassion is at the top of the list. A day in the life of a nurse is one that is filled with interactions concerning those who aren’t in good physical or mental health. No one is at their best in those situations and it is often left up to a qualified nurse to handle tricky situations with class and sensitivity in order to prevent the situation from becoming worse.

While the life of a nurse can be challenging, it can also be rewarding. Helping those who aren’t able to help themselves is a worthwhile pursuit. However, before embarking on a journey to become a nurse, it is a good idea to take the time to fully understand the level of commitment that will have to come with the job in order to be successful.
